Ice-Blue Dial
This ice blue – a colour reserved for watches made of platinum – dial is adorned with a honeycomb motif with a sunray finish. Its creation calls on traditional craftsmanship and high-technology methods, all mastered in-house. The honeycomb structure is cut with a femtosecond laser, which is also used to etch the delicate lines in the grooves separating each cell. The dial features a Chromalight display, the luminescent open numerals and index hour markers grant optimal legibility in any situation. The hands are also luminescent and have been specially designed for the model.
Fluted bezel
The Rolex fluted bezel is a mark of distinction. Originally, the fluting of the Oyster bezel had a functional purpose: it served to screw the bezel onto the case helping to ensure the waterproofness of the watch. It was therefore identical to the fluting on the case back, which was also screwed onto the case for waterproofness, using specific Rolex tools. Over time, the fluting became an aesthetic element, a genuine Rolex signature feature. Today the fluted bezel is a mark of distinction, in gold on this Land-Dweller 40.
Platinum
Rare and precious, platinum is striking for its silvery whiteness and vibrant luminosity. It is among the densest and heaviest metals in the world, distinguished by unique chemical and physical properties such as exceptional corrosion resistance. Paradoxically, it is also soft, elastic and highly malleable, which makes machining and polishing especially difficult, demanding an extremely high degree of skill. Rolex always uses 950 platinum, an alloy consisting of 950‰ (thousandths) platinum, painstakingly crafted in-house by the fine metalworkers at Rolex. The noblest of metals for the finest of watches.

Lavender dial
The colours created for the Oyster Perpetual range start life as a lacquer, which must be meticulously applied in a controlled-atmosphere environment to avoid dust and other contamination. The brass plate of the dial base receives layer upon layer of lacquer, six in all, to form a regular, uniform surface. The last step is varnishing and polishing to bring out the full brilliance and depth of colour. The various inscriptions are then pad printed, and the hour markers and crown riveted by hand. The dial, gleaming in its perfection, is all set to take its place on top of the movement at the watch assembly phase.
Oystersteel
Rolex uses Oystersteel for its steel watch cases. Specially developed by the brand, Oystersteel belongs to the 904L steel family, alloys most commonly used in high-technology and in the aerospace and chemical industries, where maximum resistance to corrosion is essential. Oystersteel is extremely resistant, offers an exceptional finish once polished and maintains its beauty even in the harshest environments.

The Oyster bracelet is a perfect alchemy of form and function, aesthetics and technology. The Yacht-Master II features a bidirectional rotatable bezel fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert in blue ceramic. Extremely hard and virtually scratchproof, the high-technology ceramic used by Rolex requires special tools for its machining. Its stable colour is unaffected by ultraviolet rays, and thanks to its chemical composition, this ceramic is inert and cannot corrode. On this blue Cerachrom insert, the moulded, recessed graduations and numerals are coated with platinum or yellow gold via PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition). The first half hour of the graduation is set out minute by minute. With the bezel in the neutral position, the final 30 seconds of the countdown can be read in more detail via the chronograph centre seconds hand. The graduated bezel, whose knurled edge offers excellent grip, also allows the wearer to easily measure time intervals – for example, the sailing time between two buoys.
